Emily 1
I went back and dug up some photos I took 20 years ago so I could work from my own photos in digital for a change. So I plan to do a series of paintings of Emily. This one I am already planning to do in traditional pastels on paper next. After a VERY slow start with digital painting, I am now getting results that I like better than my traditional painting and want to try and transfer that skill back to my pastel painting. So my next painting up will hopefully be a pastel from the same photo.
This painting was an experiment of using my old 4x6 prints from film (remember film cameras?) that I scan in to work from. The goal of this painting is color. The last painting's goal was to use a drawing method that works equally well in digital or on paper.
I used the same color/value block in here that I have to use with pastels.
Next I will be trying it in pastel on a new drawing board type that supposedly will hold more chalk and allow me to get stronger colors and values as well as hopefully more detail with pastel.

Start of blocking in process
Face and hair blocked in
All Blocked in. This gives me my first view of how the finished painting will look.
First blending pass. I now have a fuzzy version of the final image.
Added a background
Decided to extend the dress. Dress cropped looked too small for the head.
Now to do the final detail drawing. Here the face has had its first detail pass.
Hair and dress detailed and freckles added. Only careful check and final corrections left.
